Diane Baranowski - NvFRW President

My late husband and I lived and raised our family in Sacramento for 25 years before moving to Reno in 2006, and I joined Sparks Republican Women very shortly after arriving. I served as Secretary for 2 years and felt ready to become President of my club after having been thoroughly and patiently mentored by our own Lynne Hartung, who continues to serve as National Federation of Republican Women Member-at-Large.  I was honored to have been encouraged to run for NvFRW President last year and am happily learning to put my leadership skills to the test. I have held the following positions:

  • Secretary of Sparks Republican Women   2010-2012

  • Member Washoe County Republican Central Committee 2010-2018

  • President, Sparks Republican Women 2012-2013

  • Member Nevada State Republican Central Committee 2012-2014; 2017-2018

  • Chair, Republican Women of Northern Nevada PAC 2015

  • Northern Director, Nevada Federation of Republican Women, 2016-2017

  • President, Nevada Federation of Republican Women 2018

Lynn Armanino - 1st Vice President, Programs

I am an advocate for Nevada and I am an optimist. We have to work to turn and then keep Nevada red.  As Victor Joecks so aptly phrased it, “If Democrats take full control of state government in 2019, Nevada will become California — without the beaches.” As a staunch Republican I believe in the grass roots efforts of the NvFRW and NFRW. I also strongly believe in the 11th Commandment, “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.” If we attacked Democrats with the same fervor we attack fellow Republicans, Nevada would be red today. We should not levy assaults on fellow Republicans if we want to win but, instead, use assaults on Democrats only.  Republican assaults led to Barry Goldwater’s defeat for president in 1964 and Republican assaults are happening to President Trump today. Let’s come together as Republicans and stop defeating ourselves. Together we can make a difference. If a biography can have a mission statement, this is mine. The following are positions I have held:

  • Southern Director, NvFRW, 2016-2017

  • Leadership Chair, NvFRW, 2016-2017

  • Chair, RWSN PAC, 2016-2017

  • President Southern Hills Republican Women, 2016-2017

  • President Southern Hills Republican Women, 2014-2015

  • Board of Director of RWSN PAC, 2015

  • Board of Director of RWSN PAC, 2014

  • Board of Director Original Member of RWSN PAC, 2013

  • Past Southern Hills RW Campaign Director, 2012-2013

  • Past NvFRW Campaign Director, 2013

Caroline Smith - 2nd Vice President, Membership

I moved to Nevada from Louisiana over 20 years ago and fell in love with every aspect of this wonderful state. Being raised in a politically oriented family with strong family and conservative values, it wasn’t long before I dived into and was actively engaged in local and state political activities and races. After becoming a Washoe County Central Committee member, I was elected to the NV Central Committee as well as the Secretary of the Mount Rose Republican Women. Enjoying the interaction and camaraderie of my fellow Republicans, I felt as enthralled as Odysseus sailors to the call of the Sirens and soon was a member of all of the Women’s clubs in Reno and Incline Village and even the Republican Men’s Club. I later attended as a delegate both the Washoe and State Republican Conventions. The greatest thrill was my attendance at the 2012 National Republican Convention in Tampa with my brother who was a delegate from Louisiana. My volunteer work lead me to be engaged in the planning for various fundraisers, such as the Washoe County Golf Tournaments and Washoe County Lincoln Day Events in Reno. My work quickly expanded to my becoming the NV Federation Republican Women’s Fund Raiser Chair.  Presently I am honored to serve as the 2nd VP for the NvFRW, which presents new and invigorating challenges for me. When I’m not banging away at some Republican project, I indulge into the many gifts of my wonderful state, such as skiing, hiking, fishing, and exploring its rich historical past. I share some of my volunteer time in various capacities for the Sierra Park Foundation and the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and plays in Incline Village, NV.

Barb Hawn - Secretary

Barb has been a Republican since 1980, when at 19 she cast her ballot for Ronald Reagan when participating in her first Presidential Election.  She is currently a member of Sparks Republican Women, serving as 1st Vice President and has been a member of the NvFRW since 2010.  In 2015 Barb ran successfully for Secretary of the Nevada Republican Party she was re-elected in 2017.  In 2013 she ran and was elected Secretary of Washoe County Republican Party she was re-elected in 2015.  She attended the historic 2016 National Republican Convention in Cleveland, OH where Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence became the Republican nominees. In addition to her political involvement, Barb is currently a Board Member/Marketing Chair of Sierra State Parks Foundation and active in the Reno Rodeo, Nevada Right to Life, American Heart Association Circle of Red and Our Lady of the Snows. In November 1991, Barb and her husband, Brian moved to Reno, NV.   They will celebrate their 30th Anniversary in 2018.  Their son, Matthew is a graduate of University of Nevada and is a Graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Biotechnology.  In her spare time Barb enjoys attending movies, playing Pinochle and Nevada Wolf Pack athletics.

Karen Von Schimmelmann - Treasurer

Hi, my name is Karen Von Schimmelmann and I look forward to serving as your NvFRW treasurer for the next two years. I was born and raised in Michigan, lived in southern California for a number of years, and moved to Nevada in 1990. While living in Southern California I worked for several documentary production companies as a Production Accountant. I continued this, commuting from Sparks to So Cal every other week. I was then hired by Paramount Pictures as a Production Accountant/Location Auditor overseeing all aspects of accounting on movies for television, pilot episodes, and television series in various parts of the country. I spent the later part of my career doing a television series for Warner Bros in Wilmington, North Carolina for three and a half years. After retiring I found that I had time to pursue interests that had been put on hold, among them politics. Being a staunch Republican, I began volunteering in the Washoe County GOP office, joined Washoe Republican Women, the Washoe County Central Committee, and worked with various local candidates. I have served as co-chair of WRW Caring for America committee, and for the previous two years have been treasurer of WRW. I enjoy travel, genealogy, reading, and especially time with my two sons and their families, who, fortunately for me, also live in Sparks.

Cher Daniels - Northern Director

I am a native of Texas. I am the oldest of four girls in a military family. I have been married three times. Divorced once, widowed once and have been married to Bryan for almost 26 years. I have seven stepchildren; two grandsons and one great grandson. I have “adopted” Ashly Garberick as my daughter and her son, CJ, as my grandson, and her daughter, Emily as my granddaughter. I worked as a self-employed hairstylist for 32 years and owned two salons. My husband Bryan and I moved to Nevada in 2002. We love all the different activities this area has to offer. We enjoy dressing for whatever activity we are going to in the appropriate attire. I joined the church, May 12, 1990. I joined the Sparks Republican Women's club in the spring of 2014. I try to keep up on issues and do what I can to be of help. I became the president in January 2015. I was 2017 NvFRW Northern Regents Director. I am now the NvFRW Northern Director for 2018 – 2019. I hope to lead the Sparks Republican Women's club into a successful 2018, and to grow our membership into a larger club. I pray that I can help this country to get back on course with Heavenly Fathers plan.

Michelle Baert - Southern Director

Michelle currently serves as President of PBG Communications a firm focused on creating public relations strategy for clients. For 11 years prior, Michelle served as a director at Sherman Worldwide, an international affairs advisory firm. She had spent many years as a marketing executive for Cinema Advantage, 20 th Century Fox and Gramercy Pictures – having starting her career as an exhibitor relations representative with Triumph Pictures. She is a long term volunteer serving on the board of Variety Children’s Charity where she helps  provide funding and services for programs that strive to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life for children who are mentally and physically challenged, abused, sick, homeless or underprivileged. She also volunteers as the den leader for the local Scouts of America troop. Michelle graduated Purdue University with a BA in communications and currently resides in Henderson with her family.

Darlene Ruedy - Nominating Committee Chair

I think it’s a GREAT time to be a Republican Woman in the State of Nevada! November 8, 2016, the Republican Women in America made sure our collective voices were heard. We were loud and we were proud. We hoped for all hope and dared to dream; all while we prayed. We have now seen first-hand the true power of prayer. I am a proud Republican Woman in America. A retired Douglas County Deputy Sheriff, I was proud to serve as a Legislative Police Officer for one session. My dear husband Buzz, our eight children, 17 grandchildren, and three great-granddaughters are the loves of my life. My love and devotion to my family and friends, my God and my Country are the foundation of my life. I work with passion and conviction every day as I serve and provide for those to whom I am dedicated. I am proud to be the newly elected President of the Washoe Republican Women and honored and humbled to serve as the Nominating Chairman for the Nevada Federation of Republican Women. I am looking forward to meeting and working with you all. I know when we are “united” and support one an other in a good cause... there is nothing that “we” can’t accomplish.

Lori Piotrowski - Immediate Past President

Prior to serving as President of the NvFRW, Lori Piotrowski served two terms as President of the Boulder City Republican Women's Club.  In addition, she has volunteered as Communications Director for the Clark County Republican Party, initiating a biweekly newsletter to central committee members; writing press releases and managing national and international press releases during a heated Senate race; and serving as spokesperson to English and Spanish media outlets. She holds a Master's in Romance Languages, but only recently has she used it to teach Spanish and Portuguese at the College of Southern Nevada.  Lori began her career in publishing, moved into corporate communications, architectural photography and construction journalism, and finally into public relations for a software development company.  In September 2015, she published her first historical novel, Revolutionary Heart, focusing on the events leading up to the American Revolution.
